Mountain Gorillas and Lake Bunyonyi

Mountain gorillas in Uganda is among the main activities that attracts visitors to come to this country. Uganda has two mountain Gorilla Parks Bwindi and Mgahinga, this makes it different from other countries offering gorilla tracking activity. Other Countries, Rwanda and Democratic republic of Congo each have only one gorilla park.

Lake Bunyonyi is located in south western Uganda. The park is among the deepest lakes in Africa.The popular Lake Bunyonyi means the place of many birds; the lake is known for its big numbers of bird life.  The lake has 29 islands include Punishment Island and Bushara Island.

The lake can also be a stopover for visitors connecting to other destinations. It can be an overnight stay.  It is the largest and highest of three small lakes Lake Mutanda, and Lake Mulehe in the Kigezi highlands that are part of the Nile basin. Lake Bunyonyi was formed by volcanic eruption blocking a valley in the Ruchiga mountains near the present-day village of Muko on the north-west tip of the lake

Bwindi National Park is not very far Lake Bunyonyi, most especially the regions of Ruhija and Buhoma. After mountain gorillas like in the afternoon, some visitors head to Lake Bunyonyi for relaxation from the tiresome activity.  The lake can also be accessed from Mgahinga National Park, it depends on the programme/ Itinerary of the visitors. Punishment Island

Long time ago with the local people around the lake, it was illegal and abomination for a girl to get pregnant before marriage. Now to punish these girls and to act as a lesion to others, they used to take such girls to this island to die of hunger or while trying to swim to the main land. Men who couldn’t afford the pride price could go and pick these girls. This punishment was abandoned.  Other Islands on Lake Bunyonyi include, sharp Island (Bwama) Kahunye Island and Bushara.

Lake Bunyonyi is a perfect place for bird lovers. There is a combination of water birds and migratory boirds. There are different trails which can let you view more bird life.
